One Day at a Time – ‘One Day at a Time’ is a popular folk wisdom saying to take each day as it comes. It is the wisdom of the phoenix, that perpetually resurrecting creature, who reminds us to ‘live one life at a time’. It is the phoenix who takes each life as it comes, to live and enjoy the present and not be overly concerned with future lives. And what is the value of that advice for us mere mortals. Without knowledge of resurrection or reincarnation or after life, is it wise advice for us too? One wonders if a cat, with its assured nine lives, would give or even take the same advice. How about that of an immortal being, say an angel? And what is the phoenix’s adage worth to the Nihileafs? Their lives much exceed that of humans and plants, seemingly even the oldest and longest lasting of them, and perhaps the Nihileafs’ lives will exceed the sum duration of all the phoenix’s lives. To think of the cumulative boredism, ennui, listlessness, loneliness, despair, desperation, and meaningless that a Nihileaf will experience would be much to contemplate. To take one life at a time must surely be overwhelming for them, perhaps they should content themselves with taking it one day at a time. – Zachary
