Nothing Happened – “Last time… I was here a grand total of three days, all right? Last time, the rum runners used this island as a cache, they came past and I was able to barter passage off.” To which was responded, “So that’s it, then? That’s the secret, grand adventure… You spent three days lying on a beach drinking rum.” So goes the conversation between the stranded Captain Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. It also encapsulates how I feel my travels, and admittedly non-travels when there should have been some, have gone. Uneventful, unexciting, and if not unmemorable, at least not worth the memories. Plus an inordinate amount of time during my travels is spent drinking, both rum and not. Unfulfilling adventures makes me feel boring, wasteful of time and experiences, and inadequate. I doubt Stoke has the same feelings to whatever happened during the separation from Mungi and Brump. In fact, we do not even know the true nature of Stoke’s journeys. Perhaps they really were thrilling and full of amazement, but Stoke just prefers not to share them. Or perhaps more likely, Stoke reacted to any great adventures with indifference. – Zachary
