‘Idle hands are the devils plaything’. So goes the common saying, if that is true then idle minds must be victims to feelings of ‘malaise, apathy, listlessness, and despondency’ and ‘depression and inertia’. In my experience that is a fundamental nature of consciousness, but likely it is just my mind’s predisposition (as well as those like me). There are likely many who by default are cheery, optimistic, and who only encounter the dark recesses of the mind when outside circumstances force it upon them, but I can’t imagine what that must be like. Rather I understand the need for distractions and there are many available – alcohol, tobacco, sleep, sex, internet, television, food, fitness, etc. Unfortunately for Brump and company there are no distractions to be found around for them. – Zachary
